CORVALLIS, Ore. – Greenberry Industrial, one of the West Coast’s leading full service industrial general contractors and fabricators, has been awarded Shell’s 2009 Contractor Health, Security, Safety, and Environmental (HSSE) Leadership Award. The honor recognizes Greenberry’s incident-free performance in 2009 at Shell’s Portland, Ore., facility.

“Shell is committed to the pursuit of ‘no harm to people’ and to ‘protect the environment,’” stated Viet Van, Shell’s North America Operations Manager. “We hold the same expectations for our contractors and, as evidenced by its work in Portland, Greenberry Industrial shares our commitment to these goals.”

“Receiving a safety award from a global company like Shell is a tremendous honor that validates our continued focus on delivering projects safely, and with the highest quality possible,” said Greenberry President Jason Pond. “We have a top-down culture when it comes to safety, and focus on internal training and the right equipment to make sure our employees go home at the end of the day unharmed.”

The Shell Portland project posed numerous challenges during construction that required expert coordination to the keep the plant operational. For example, the facility offered only a narrow, 20-foot access road that was utilized by all contractors, subcontractors and Shell operations. When it came time for Greenberry to install the facility’s sensitive equipment, it took extra precautions to follow the required safety procedures.

“This project was extremely challenging from the start,” said Pond. “We made sure our team complied with Shell’s 12-point safety policy all along the way. The result was a successful project with no accidents.”

Greenberry Industrial is known for its industry-leading safety record. To date, the company has completed more than 2.2 million consecutive work hours, over the last six years, without a lost-time accident. Greenberry Industrial also recently rolled out its SAFESTART internal training program, in which all of its employees, from its president to the on-site workers, complete safety training classes.

In addition, as one of Oregon’s Top 150 private companies, Greenberry Industrial has been recognized for several high-profile projects in its home state this past year.

Safety spurs business

Greenberry’s safety commitment is also proving beneficial for its business. Because of its renowned record, the company has strategically expanded the past two years with offices in Burlington, Wash.,Vancouver, Wash., and Ontario, Calif., to better serve new clients in those geographic areas.

“Our focus on safety makes employees feel good about themselves because they are part of a larger initiative,” said Pond. “These important measures keep our workers employed and off disability, which adds to the company’s bottom line.”
